"Healthy Self-evaluation"

Dear Friend,

I recently discussed with a friend the important distinction between stubbornness and perseverance. While most of us don’t want to be considered stubborn, we do believe in the value of thoughtful persistence. So how are stubbornness and persistence different?

  • Stubbornness expresses an untamed defensive response to life while persistence expresses a thoughtful, self-controlled, proactive approach to life.
  • Stubbornness cloaks self-doubt and low self-esteem, while persistence evidences a healthy sense of well-being and goal orientation.
  • Stubbornness undermines healthy relationships, while persistence strengthens and maintains healthy relationships.

It is important for each of us to attempt healthy self-evaluation. Being honest with ourselves permits us to gradually shed the flaws of stubbornness and grow into the strengths of persistence.
