Righteousness Defined

Dear Friend,

The concept of righteousness often strikes me a bit ironically. I know when I think about righteousness, my first impression should be good. But honestly, for me and many others, the words we associate with righteousness are not pleasant. Subconsciously, I often connect the words “rigid,” “arbitrary” and “religiously obnoxious” with the word “righteous.” I desire to correct this. I intend to replace these unpleasant ideas with words that more properly expose the essence of righteousness. Words like healthy, happy and holy. Words like our very best, moral excellence and expertise.

Recently, I began to think about righteousness through the lens of Divine creativity. I believe God works creatively in our psyche, our family and friendships, our life experiences and our church, to help us make small steps toward getting life right.

Righteousness means rightness. God loves it when we get it right.

I invite you to join me in the following prayer:

Dear Lord,
I enjoy life more when I am getting it right, rather than when I am wrong.
I know that you love rightness. So today I open my mind to right thinking,
My heart to right affections, my will to right choices,
And my spirit to a right relationship with You.
By Your divine guidance, teach me how to get life a little more right every day.
Thank you for Your steadfast love.
